After RTYD I had high hopes, really thought the Quo I liked was back and then TW came along .. I don't actually remember how many songs I skipped straight away, apart from Rude Awaking Time and Queenie - these were instant dislikes. Usually a Quo album has songs that grow on me and pretty quickly, but with TW it was the other way round. This album un-grew ( ) and got on my nerves really fast and I still find it as near as unlistenable, even the songs I like, due to its plastic sound. I've no idea what they tried to do there and why ?? Just a few years before RTYD had such a great sound, one of the best Quo ever achieved .. As we're voting dislikes from the album release I need time to think this one through .. from today's POV there'd merely be 3-4 songs max. left that I'd not skip. This album made me completely lose faith in the band again. Not their worst album - that was probably prevented by the sheer number of songs - but very close.

Lover of the Human Race is the only song worth listening to - very occasionally. What a boring, boring album. This and Soft In The Head are the two I still like. Probably a few more good pop songs on this too, but rendered completely unlistenable by the sound. I used to like Sherri when the album was released (so for once they got the single right), not any more though.

Almost from the off, I only played 6 tracks. So that's a whopping 10 songs that I skipped after hearing the album only a couple of times. The fact that it actually HAS 6 listenable tracks prevents it from being Quo's worst ever effort - but only just. I've played it a few times since all the way through but, unfortunately, most of it makes me wince. For me, it does actually contain the two worst songs they ever recorded in Restless and Tango. An album dominated by the writing of Francis Rossi and Bernie Frost and the absence of anything from Rick was very noticeable in terms of balance. It's easier to list those I DO play; Going Nowhere, I Didn't Mean It; Sail Away (a guilty pleasure! ), Soft In The Head, Lover Of The Human Race and Rude Awakening Time. The rest are just not for me. The arrangements and chord progressions range from uninspired to downright dull. And the poor use of Andy's synths to provide the principal riff or melody was never more acute. That's down to the producer I'm afraid. To add insult to injury, there were 7 new songs included as extras with the single releases as well and none of these were to my taste either. 3 of them were written by Rossi/Frost. Am I labouring the point? So that was 23 brand new songs; 6 of them only just passable. It was not a great time to be a Quo fan. Having said that, the tour was great with quite a few going into the set list. Mostly the songs that I actually liked, which was handy. It charted reasonably well but I suspect that was on the strength of its predecessor. It also received half decent reviews including one in "Q" magazine. I'm afraid that speaks volumes. A rag more up it's own skinny trousered ar$e than even the NME. A nadir in Quo's career. Thankfully, after that, the only way was up. ( (c) Yazz )

I always thought that Sherri, sounded a lot like that in places! Very catchy but very poppy. I think if Rock Til You Drop and it's singles had sold better Francis might have persevered once more with the 'rock route', but it obviously didn't meet expectations so he tried the 'pop route' again.

That might be true. Hard to tell. He did become confused and even a little depressed at the time. I remember him saying in an interview that he didn't understand what Quo fans wanted any more if they hated Thirsty Work so much. Because he really liked it. Which I suppose means he probably never did understand Quo fans. Or fully appreciate what he'd written before. Thirsty Work was almost as far away from what I wanted to hear as it could possibly have been in the mid 90's. Rhino said it was a good album, just not a Quo album. He was half right It was simply a question of one songwriting partnership dominating. Only it wasn't Rossi/Young. When they got back together, the difference between Thirsty Work and Heavy Traffic was there for all to see. It was startling! Glenn Madeiros. eh? A mate at work had that as the first dance at his wedding back in the day. He's never lived it down

I can't understand the negativity towards this album!
I can actually, it's very, very poor, isn't it?
I think I could listen to Goin' Nowhere, Confidence, Like It Or Not, Soft In The Head, Lover Of The Human Race and Ciao Ciao.
There's just so many poor things associated with this album. The songs, the number of songs, the sound, the artwork. It's all poor as far as I'm concerned.
Didn't like the single, I think it's too fast and the one song that Rick sung lead on is the same for me.
I think I heard Rick say that this album was "too plinky plonky". That sums it up perfectly for me!
I don't know if Rick lacked motivation or whatever but his contribution was really missed here, wasn't it? Some of the previous Rossi/Frost efforts I did enjoy and still like to this day but the songs on here are not their finest hour.
Restless. Where do we begin with this one? A tad self indulgent is it not? I just wonder who told them that this was a good idea? Just thinking about a night at the SECC in Glasgow hearing this brings me out in a cold sweat. I still remember standing there and thinking "what's going on here?". Apart from that, I still enjoyed that tour.
This isn't how I want my Status Quo to sound.

None for me!
Clearly I’m in the minority but I love this album. Maybe because it instantly takes me back to my mid teens and brings back great memories. I had it on cassette and spent most of my time out riding motorbikes, with this album playing constantly via my Walkman.
Loved it then, love it now. Granted, it sure isn’t ‘typical’ Quo but that doesn’t bother me in the slightest.
I can find at least one track I don’t like on every Quo album, apart from this one (and no I’ve not had a beer).

I like this album too, even songs like sail away or tango. I like it better than BTB or 1982. Goin nowhere is a favourite of mine, it was my first ring tone mobile phone. Ok, there is Restless. It might be that this song were intended to be for another singer (like sorry, that it was for demis roussos www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWJ4K6OFcAY) and no one got interested at the end. It is difficult to come up with an acceptable explanation for including this song in the album and live.

Restless is on the 1982 Rehearsals bootleg, if i remember right. It is, so it had obviously been considered for some time. I actually think it's a dreadful ballad - even by ballad standards! Musically mundane and lyrically naff. It wasn't even Jennifer Warnes' finest hour

TW along with a few others (i.e. Don't Stop) makes a close second. I'd not blame the Rossi/Frost partnership though. At least they did come up with SOMETHING when others contributed nothing or as near as. And it doesn't sound anything like a Rossi solo album either. Bernie's contributions or the studio input from the others prevented that. I do blame Francis for the sound though - and I've no idea why he got it so wrong, when a few years earlier RTYD had sounded so great. @bam - seek help !! :oo:

Nice one (what happened to the thumbs up graemlin? )

Hm - There's quite a few songwriting contributions from others on there too. I.e. the single Sherri Don't Fail Me Now is a Rhino tune .. So this is a band effort minus Rick writing, but Rick did take part in the studio work too. And I can't stand this album as opposed to both Francis' solo albums - but everybody hears something different I suppose

Some of the songs on Frame's solo albums (particularly the first one) weren't co-written by him! I'm not saying it sounds the same as the other 2 either, just to me it sounds like Francis doing what he wanted with Quo; writing 11 of the songs and producing the album to get the sound he wanted. And as has been said many times, you can't hardly hear any of Rick's influence (guitar wise). To me it's the least 'Quo sounding' album, even more so than Perfect Remedy (which is my least favourite).

Francis also contributes all of the lead vocals other than Queenie. Which, quite unusually, is a Rossi/Frost composition sung by Rick. It's like they were giving him something to do! Or trying to MAKE it sound more like a Quo album by breaking the vocals up a bit. I don't really like this album much. Never have. But I do prefer it to King Of The Doghouse which pitched up only a year later. Francis was and is a prolific songwriter. But that can lead to inconsistency. Often more quantity than quality. But those on ....Doghouse are good, although all three were written years before. There are one or two gems on both albums but it's just not enough. The actual Francis Rossi compositions on his first solo album are easily the best. They stick out a mile. The rest is dross. If it was a vehicle for Tony McAnaney - which I've since read that it was - then it failed miserably. Serves him right 1992 to 1998 - a terrible time to be a Quo fan. Thank goodness for Sheryl Crow and Garbage. They kept me sane
