As I keep repeating Quo should never have recorded even one covers album. It only caused them grieve as they were forced to record two more. Now that we have them though, did they get better for you or did you greet the first one and things only got worse from then on ? How do you rank them from best to worst ? For me it's 1. Famous In The Last Century 2. Riffs 3. Don't Stop

Riffs at least had a vague Quoish sound with the title necessitating a slightly more guitar driven sound than had been the norm, Famous In The Last Century was painful but at least the song choice wasn't too terrible but Don't Stop was just awful, massively over produced sound and some mind bogglingly ridiculous song choices. Bizarrely for me it was only saved by the song I though would work least well "All around my hat".

1. Riffs 2. DS 3. FITLC
Difficult to work out which is the least bad if you know what I mean. FITLC has only on track that I now play (When I'm Dead & Gone). On DS I play 4 or 5, and on Riffs I play most although this is skewed by the inclusion of reworkings, most of which I quite enjoy. I particularly like the Riffs version of Caroline; as close to the live version as you can get in a studio recording. I think Hounddog on FITLC is my least favourite of all the cover tracks that Quo have ever done. I find it has no redeeming features what so ever.

I actually think Riffs would've been better without the reworkings of their own songs, especially since it's the hits mainly. I just don't want to hear these any more, even if it were the best versions ever. At least some of the covers are quite good like I Fought The Law or Takin' Care Of Business .

Don't Stop FITLC Riffs
All 3 have some great stuff on them but also some dubious choices.

Difficult to work out which is the least bad if you know what I mean.... I think that's the bottom line with most of us. I thought Don't Stop was passable at the time, although hardly a masterpiece. And it sold very well, which I was chuffed about. But time has taken it's toll. Hated the sleeves of all three albums. I've had to have a look and see how many tracks I still listen to from each. So I have to merit them in this order: 1. Riffs (4 songs) 2. Famous In The Last Century (3 songs) 3. Don't Stop (3 songs) Famous.... gets the nod simply because the remaster has a live (if short) version of Forty Five Hundred Times on it, which I have always really liked since it appeared on the single. The crowd are immense. But not much of a recommendation, I admit.

It has Gerdundula, Forty Five Hundred Times and Rain. Gerdundula was pretty new live at the time. A real novelty.

1.Riffs 2.Don't Stop 3.FITLC.
I don't listen to any of these anymore but out of the three, then RIFFS is definitely my favourite. I think when the covers albums were first muted, the songs on the album tend to be ones I thought they should be having a go at as opposed to some of the ones that appeared earlier. I feel the same as gogs re Caroline. I think that's probably my favourite recorded version of that song and I like the re-recorded versions of the other Quo standards too. I Fought The Law, All Day.. Don't Bring Me Down (that isn't on iTunes but it was on the album?) and Pump It Up (I can't stand Elvis Costello but I've always liked that song) are the others that I'd still give a listen too.
Still do not like the cover of Don't Stop. Quo in jackets, collar and ties is not a winning look as far as I'm concerned. I don't really mind what they wear on stage but that doesn't look good at all. I'd still listen to tracks 1-4. I don't mind Don't Stop either and Raining In My Heart is a very polished performance but I'm not sure if it's for me though. Don't mind Sorrow though. I think they ruined Get Back and ditto Proud Mary. I think those two versions are absolutely dire (IMVHO ).
I think my mind was poisoned a bit when I heard Francis describe FITLC as a "party album" in an interview when it was released. Just sounded a tad ominous to me, that's all. Old Time Rock 'n' Roll, Roll Over Beethoven, Rave On are OK to my ears as are Rock 'n' Me and Once Bitten... ROB might be my favourite on the album as I always thought/think Rick was/is great at the Chuck Berry songs, superb actually.
I always think that there's not really any point in covering a song unless it can be enhanced and for me, on these three albums, I'm not sure how many times they've achieved that and quite often, they've detracted from the original and sometimes by quite some distance.

I think they ruined Get Back.... I totally agree. It had too big a production for what was originally a terrifically simple 12-bar shuffle. I feel the same about Once Bitten Twice Shy. It's interesting that the songs I thought would have suited Quo down to the ground resulted in below par versions to say the least. What I would say, though, is that the Don't Stop tour had loads of new songs in it. Fun Fun Fun, Get Back, Proud Mary, Get Out Of Denver and All Around My Hat were all in the set. I'd never say they shouldn't have recorded a covers album. The success of the first one in particular justifies the decision. It may even have saved their career. But it was a long time till the next album three years later. And that was on a different label. Be interesting to know what went on in those intervening years. Negotiation wise I mean with the record company. Double platinum one minute, no record deal the next.

Anyone else, think this topic could have been headed "Wank! - The covers albums", a new low budget tv show hosted by Jonathan Ross?

I don't want to even think about another covers album ! Quo are able to do great covers occasionally, no doubt about that, but I'd much rather have just one or two max. on an album that otherwise solely contains original material, new original material ..

I wouldn't even begin to suggest another covers album. I was just mulling around some of the tracks that they'd done over the decades and picked out a few that I didn't mind. Although, in retrospect, Democracy ain't great. But at least I left out Restless

Wild Side Of Life (obviously !) Judy In Disguise I Knew The Bride Cadillac Ranch
No songs that have already been on a regular Quo album. Maybe there are more, but I doubt it, so just an EP for me.

Carol from NTL is an absolutely cracking cover. I very much dislike the 'vanilla' light entertainment covers they did on Don't Stop and FITLC. Riffs is a bit more listenable, but it still has a whiff of stale karaoke about it. I blame it all on the success of Anniversary Waltz. That really laid down the blueprint of them shifting from their comeback in the 80s to what was to come in the 90s. It was almost as if they didn't know how to define themselves, with this new Rossi & Parfitt fronted band. It's fascinating in hindsight now, looking back at how it all played out. They were certainly the wilderness years.
Does anyone else consider the two Aquostic albums to also be cover albums? I do. Covering themselves. It's a similar feeling to whenever they would rely on putting out RAOTW or WYW as a 'bonus' track or a b-side, in a perceived effort to try and sell more copies of a record, as if Joe Punter would only be interested in buying it, as long as it had those famous songs on it. Their over reliance on those songs as a marketing tool always saddened me.
Same as the posters for the last winter Plugged In tour, when they felt the need to print the names of the Big Songs around the border of the posters. As if people needed reminding that this is the band who sang Down Down etc.
