It is my view that in future electric shows, Caroline should not be used to open the show. I seem to recall that in one show in the 90's I went to they opened with Paper Plane which seemed to work well.
What other songs could be used as openers?

I think both Down Down and WYW have been used as opening tracks in the past. They did open with Paper Plane in the 90s though it had a "Caroline" intro.

I think that Caroline should be replaced as a show opener because the intro was an iconic piece performed by Rick which I think should now be preserved in memory. For however long the next chapter of the Quo story continues, its time to open up with something different. (IMO of course!)

Paper Plane isn't a good opener imo... also the fact they changed the key so it would 'flow' into softer ride.

That Paperplane with the Caroline opening certainly threw me! As for suitable replacements? I really don't know. I haven't seen Richie play yet but I'd like to hear from those that have what Caroline was like. @bam , @inna and snakelady , did it pass muster? Junior's Wailing anyone? Would that work? I understand as to why some may want a change but think I'd stick with it.

(I'd put a LOL gremlin in but I'm on the mobile). To be fair though points 1& 2 are true. I wouldn't go as far as to say 3 is true. That said I have never analysed what's going on at a gig. My heads down, my bum is off the seat and I'm having a great time. If it had been very different I'm sure I would have noticed. I like Caroline as an opener although I'm the first to moan about the set list so it'd be hypocritical of me to not support a change. Always thought Mystery Song would work well although without Rick I'm not sure about the vocals. Down Down would probably get my vote.

May I ask why you think it should be replaced ?, obviously I too think it should be replaced but likely for different reasons to you. As for a new opener, possibly something from recently is all I could suggest, but I don't really care to be honest. How about Gotta Get Up and Go?
I know its not very well known so that goes against It, but it builds and then rocks like a b@@@ard.

I knew the three I mentioned had and I just wanted to hear their opinion, that's all. I trust them to be honest and objectionable and again, that's all

Hm, yep, it does build up nicely and surely could be played heavier live - I actually like this type of start, that's why I'd favour Hard Time. With GGUAG I'm not sure about the general tempo though, if it isn't too fast for a first song ?

I'd have plumped for Junior's Wailing (if anything at all) but only the full 70's live intro version. It remains something of a disappointment to me that the reunion gigs didn't begin like that. And I have no idea why. The atmosphere was amazing but can you imagine the chaos these opening bars would have caused? Fabulous bedlam! I can't gauge how the future of the band is to pan out. If its just a question of fulfilling already existing obligations for 2017, leave it as it is. If the band are to continue despite the "last night of the electrics", change it completely. How about Rockin'.... followed by Whatever You Want? Seriously. Crown go mad early on, leave after they've heard their favourites, letting the rest of us get on with it. It's just a bit of devilment. Still....

Still.... With Rhino on lead vocal ?!!!!, you are joking of course, er, aren't you :ignore: Surely any new opener simply must have Mr Rossi on lead vocals ? Actually, believe it or not, I never even thought of the singing. Good point. Although, personally, speaking I have no issue with Rhino doing vocals on any songs, even Rick's. I was joking but you're right; any opener would have to have Francis on lead vocals. I have little doubt its a pecking order thing. So, Rockin'.... it is then?

I'm not going to see the band again, yes they are playing here in April (just ridiculous ticket prices).
With only Francis left from the original lineup it's not my cup of tea anymore ,I know Rhino and Andy been there since forever but imho they can't call themselves SQ anymore....well of course they can and they do but never mind there are some tribute bands doing Quo songs a lot better than the current band so I'll stick to them.
Oh,there was a topic here too
well they can start with ASU never say never....

Hello. New on here so don't shout at me yet! I was thinking about this and I think Caroline WOULD be a good opener! BUT I think Francis should come on to say something even if it is just "Ladies and gentlemen, Rick Parfitt". Then they should have a video of Rick belting out the song with maybe his tele in a spotlight stage left (or right depending which way you look at it) Dunno if Richie should be in the wings or at least in the background. At the end of the song Lloyd could remove the Tele and they could cracked on! I think that might be a fitting tribute!
It's the Mystery Song and Whatever You Want that I am pondering over more.....
Obviously this is very much invho!!!

Yes, for short periods of time there have been other openers, & I think Down Down was opener for over 12 months. But FFS, for 95% of the last 39 years it's been the soddin drone then Caroline. Even the casuals know it's going to be Caroline. Please let's have something different, surprise people, shock people, but FFS let's have some sort of change
Having said that, I really do feel that Quo should now stop without Rick. We're not talking about someone who was in the band for a few months, we're talking about RICK PARFITT. Nigh on 50 years. It should stop now he's not with us.

It would really bring down the general mood and most of the casual fans are there to enjoy the gig. IMO this would be fitting for the Rick tribute event. And I doubt whoever owns the white tele now would want the guitar to be taken out on tour. If they were to use screens like they did a few years back, they could show slides of Rick from throughout his career during WYW. That would be less solemn. I doubt Francis will say anything - what could he possibly say ? 'Miss you pal' or similar ? This is personal stuff and should be kept private. No need to say something just to please (parts of) the audience, which would be dishonest too (he'd have to say it at every gig) IMVHO.

YES did exactly that - a video hommage to Chris Squire before the start of the concert. Was also very well received; then again Yes aren't Quo.

That's what I thought .. - But then, I haven't heard from them for decades and it is 40 years since the 70s, quite the time span within a human lifetime .. Reminds me: I saw Ingemar Stenmark, a former hero of mine, in an interview yesterday - now he still looks slim and fit and easily to recognise ! :oo:

I looked it up. He died in June 2015. I was never a Yes fan - quite the reverse in fact! But you obviously become aware as a teenager (and beyond) of all the line ups of all the bands; well I did. I had no idea about Chris Squire. Its funny, because Steve Howe has looked dead for years!

Only a few weeks earlier I read the news that he had been diagnosed with a form of leukaemia and had to be replaced by his friend (and earlier Yes member) Billy Sherwood for the tour. While Chris was adamant that the band should continue without him, you see negative comments all around the web saying "That's not Yes anymore". Sound familiar? Agree about Steve Howe I guess I'm one of the few who can like Close to the Edge and Piledriver

I find the last one way too long for my concentration span these days. I was also never a fan of Steve Howe's style of playing or of Jon Anderson's falsetto voice. And as soon as the guitar playing isn't for me that's almost any band discarded. I was the same with Genesis and Steve Hackett. Just didn't like his delivery. Although I'm a big Peter Gabriel fan. Anyway, we're off on tangents. As you do.

Hold You Back and Burning Bridges would do the same job I guess. Although " I can't escape this Ricky in my ears" would have a hollow ring to it. Bit tasteless actually. I just think the whole thing is now set in stone. There is an element of the band being set in their ways and very little is going to change now; especially with no new material to offer. We can all offer alternative starting songs but we all know it will be the same old regardless.
