I know I'm the minority here, but out of Rick's songs from RTYD I very much prefer Good Sign: (...) Another great song indeed. Sadly most of the RTYD songs seem to have been taken down - I could merely find a snippet of Nothing Comes Easy too and no Fame Or Money, Warning Shot, Fakin' The Blues. So I'll choose a song from another 90s album I've voted for:

It has been part of the life set for far too long - compared to it Creepin' and Oriental are still newbies. Rain had never been one of my favs, but was okay once. These days though I've come to really hate it due to overexposure (which makes it three songs in a row I can't stand in the set now ). To my ears Good Sign is Rain reinvented but better and should replace it asap.

And while we're still dealing with the 90s, a nice little cover from the time:

That would mean something about WYW must've been great in the first place .. which it hasn't .. sorry, Andy .. but that song has always been awful and is beyond salvation .. no matter the version. thumbs-down-clipart12 (Not everything Rick sings is wonderful, Inna - Francis has done some pretty horrible stuff too, i.e. Beautiful)

My contribution on the Quo song of the day is: The Reason For Goodbye. Never understood why it wasn't on the AC-album. Could have been a hitsingle imo. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMGO1lkTUW0

WYW have one of the greatest intros in a rock song ever....the song now have been overplayed to death but that's another issue.

Each to their own. But I feel I have to speak out for WYW here. First of all, it hasn't always been an "awful" song, and it surely isn't "beyond salvation". It's got one of the best intros to a Quo song, a great riff, and it's got a slow, but steady rocking rhythm. Other people must have thought so, too, because it became a great hit at the time, and it's still one of Quo's most frequently performed and well-loved songs. The lyrics are a bit cheesy, but they allegedly wrote the song in only a few hours and under the influence. It's been played to death live, and this may be one reason people are fed up with it by now. I must admit I often skip it, too, when it comes on. It's not about Rick singing the song in the first place. In fact, it's not about Rick at all. I like how the full orchestra starts to play, how the music is building up, how expectations rise, how the guitar then takes over, and how everybody is looking forward to what is coming. And then, after the great guitar intro and the drums setting in, the orchestra blending in. How they play so well together, and how everyone involved seems to have a ball. That's why I said, "Great stuff, I think". If you like it Inna, that's fine by me. And yes I too think that the intro is great - It's just the rest of the song that's boring and repetitive and leaves a lot to be desired. And it definitely wasn't a great hit here. For a short while it reached the lower regions of the charts and disappeared again pretty quickly. It was merely because it was obviously a hit in the UK that it kind of returned to us and with the band playing it relentlessly every tour, we accepted it over time. I know it's now seen as if it had always been a hit and is part of that standard music feed that is played at every single sports event (same as RAOTW and - not quite as often -WYP). Back when it came out though I hated it and thought it was the weakest song on the album, as to DJs it proved every single prejudice about Quo they could think of and in consequence they kept talking the band down for it. thumbs-down-clipart12 They should have used the intro for a different song ..

Wasn't it rumoured that the intro to Whatever You Want was going to be the intro to Accident Prone, from the previous years album Can't Stand The Heat.

I can imagine it would've fitted perfectly and maybe we'd even have gotten a chance to hear it live. It's wasted on WYW IMO.

Back to the 90s theme: Good live version, but very fast indeed

The intro would have been sooo wasted on that song, IMO. What a bore. The only good thing about it is the video with the band in front of the scrap heap and the car crusher and Rick in his Wellies, chewing gum like mad...But then again, Accident Prone was one of the better songs on the Heat album... Hm, taste is a strange thing .. I can understand why people don't like Accident Prone - it's not a rock song after all - but boring it is not, with it being one of a kind for Quo and very different to everything else they've recorded. It was more popular then the other single AAA too and made the top 20 in the years chart, if I remember correctly. I guess the reason why they used the intro for WYW is, because a) Accident Prone wasn't written by Quo, so writers shares could've posed a problem. To still give Rick his share on IYCSTH they added his name to the long Legged Linda credits - probably as Andy wasn't considered a full member still, hence was in a weaker position than the others. And b) it provided an opportunity to give Rick his share on the WYW album. Again an Andy song was chosen for the same reason as on IYCSTH. It's a great intro, but at least to a degree the song it ended up in was down to band politics is my take on things (it goes without saying that the song had to be suited for it as well).

I preferred Accident Prone over Again And Again. Talking of UK Chart positions. Besides, In My Chair peaking at #21, the other 14 singles all got into the Top 20 in the 70s

.. OK, another Quo song now: It was played live when we returned to seeing Quo live. What a great gig that was - exciting, rocking, the stage in HT colours and the subtle 'traffic report' at the start . Hubby absolutely loved Solid Gold and was seriously disappointed when it was dropped so soon. I thought it was good, but preferred Heavy Traffic, so we shared the disappointment when that too disappeared from the set - both never to return, sadly ..

I actually prefer the solo version - this one's from the very first solo gig in Edinburgh: (...) Did you see Francis that night? I know you went to Edinburgh to catch him on his solo tour. I'm sure it was a great night and quite different from the usual Quo gig. I've got the DVD, but seeing a show live is always something else, isn't it? Watching the video clip made me want to listen to the CD again, but I can't seem to find it... Yes I did, just .. We had ordered the tickets from the British ticket agency months before the gig. At first they told us they'd send them out closer to the gig. Then they told us it was too late now to send them and we were to pick them up at the venue in the early afternoon. At the venue they had never heard about our tickets (the agency had probably hoped we'd not be able to fly over due to the ash cloud ..). With me being the skeptical person I am, I had taken along everything - proof of payment, the e-mail conversation, .. We had to wait for nearly 1/2h till they finally sorted it out and found tickets for us - in the very last row at the back with slightly restricted view. Still it was one of the best, if not the best gig I've ever been to. Not knowing which song was going to be played, no hits (!) and loving nearly every single one of them. I've told it before (and more than once..), but I went yes, yesss ! with every track they started to play, absolutely fantastic. And we met two very lovely Scots, who tried to drag me down the aisle closer to the stage after having heard our story. Francis was very nervous, but despite that I think he enjoyed it immensely. As you can see in the video, it was the only gig where the girls were stood in front of the stage with Freddie behind them (maybe he was nervous too ?). Consequences: a) Whenever Francis announces another solo tour I'll be there in a flash. b) I won't ever order tickets from a British ticket agency again. Why can't they send them out straight away after they've received payment, same as here ?

*uff* Is this a not so subtle hint to do the next album poll ? I love OTL - one of my all time favourite Quo albums .. .. and I know I should do the next album poll - BTB it is - or would you like to do it ?

I remember my sister asking me, :psst: no telling me not to buy 'On The Level' as she was going to buy it for my birthday. So I had to wait a week as the album nicely wrapped in happy 18th birthday paper was deliberately put on my sister's dressing table, for all to see, when I went upstairs... The longest week of my life, but it was worth the wait..

My eldest of 3 sisters, (sadly died 4 year's ago after a short illness) was a big Quo fan and used to see them alot in pubs and clubs around Essex in the early 70s. I used to listen to the Dog album when she went out. She took to my first Quo concert at the Harlow Playhouse a month before my 14th birthday in Feb 1972, and I've never looked back. Both my other sisters and a niece are all Quo fans.
