Please share.....change of venue as King Ed has let us down. We are now at Pump and Truncheon on Bonny St, just behind Madame Tussaud's. Please share! Many apologies for the inconvenience

Here goes, a brief review of yesterday. a hungover rollin set off to Blackpool at about half 12 and picked some friends up along the way. We go there in appalling weather only to find the KIng Edward closed down so seeking shelter (and a pint) went into the Castle pub where we were immediately welcomed by some knobhead DJ who thought he was the reincarnation of Bernard Manning. Bumped into Dollie and Big Joe Murphy here and we found out where the Stated Quo gig had been moved to so we headed over (and got drenched again). A fantastic afternoon in the new venue ensued with Stated every bit good as they always are, meet ups with old pals and a bouncing pub. These bits are always the best part of the gig day for me. We then braved the elements once more (the weather was truly atrocious by this time) and headed dripping wet to the Opera house where my friends were peed off by the fact the bar was closed. I may upset a few people here by what follows and some will agree but it felt like i'd turned up at a pensioners convention. The fact that Burning Bridges raised the roof probably told me more about why i'm not over-struck on this kind of thing any more than anything else. The band themselves seemed to be on top form, Rick sounded much better than he has done for years, Rhino was solid as ever, I enjoyed some of Rossi's solos (but all that bending still grates), i thought Leon was superb and added a new dimension and i will never ever get used to Andy's tinkling (although he's clearly a very good guitarist and vocalist) but there is one thing above all other which doesn't do it for me anymore and it doesn't take much working out. I know they have to sell tickets and that set barely changing clearly does it for them so in that respect it clearly works cos the place was packed but what i'd give to hear a Slow Train, A Year, Unspoken Words, Over And Done, Nightride, Rolling Home, Ring of a Change, Bad News, Shady Lady, Breaking away, etc etc etc...i'm sure you get my drift. (my friends who went to the FF and were disappointed not to hear the hits enjoyed it so horses for courses i guess) The band sounded tighter than they've been before but if they can't play those songs by now it's time to give up!! Don't shoot the messenger.

I agree with pretty much everything RR says above.
Stated were fantastic, clearly not fazed by the King Edward debacle. Pub was bouncing, great to hear the jig in Roadhouse and they gave me a shout under my board name.
I enjoyed Quo later, they were on good form but the set list really is a test for anyone's patience. So many great songs to choose from, such a waste IMO.

Such a shame as they clearly did spend a lot of time rehearsing, if only they had put the energy into other songs - they've got so many to choose from. ??? Those songs you mention (apart from BN ) would make a great half set and they could still play the hits .. Ok, 1-0 for you due to the Stated gig

Dale..Sounds like you had a great afternoon and a good evening..so all in all a not a bad day...should be the other way round really though should it not but just shows the great vibe you get in a packed pub with Stated Quo who we have probably all experienced at some point.
I suppose the fact that Quo were playing to a large audience keeps encouraging them to play the same old stuff..shame.

Hi mate, had the same problem as you in the afternoon, ie the Stated gig being moved, just didn't know about the alternative venue as I'm not on fb. BUT, our taxi driver recommended the Castle pub as am alternative to pass a couple of hours, and that "dj" - scuse the language but what a total b*ll end! Probably the quickest pint I've ever supped, couldn't stay in that a minute longer without chinning him! So, missed Stated, hope to catch 'em another time. As regards the gig on the night, first time for me at that venue, good crowd, very good sound, but please, drop the trio of BOTE/TO/CUOY, and swap 'em for literally any other 3 songs lads! Overall 8/10 on the night for me tho, Cheers

And can we please add the gruesome threesome TW/SBYBIL/R to that 'to drop list' ? It would make room for 6 (!) new songs already. I'd give them 7/10 max., probably less .. the choice of songs was simply too bad and the fooling around during Gerd und Ulla was sooo genuine - not ! Shame you missed out on the Stated gig ..

Blackpool was the beginning of the end for me.
I really enjoyed myself in the afternoon watching Stated Quo, what a great craic, with a few beers and a good gang of mates who know and love the old Quo tunes.
But the Opera House gig left me feeling deflated. The merchandise is rubbish. It's been knocked together cheaply without any care for design or variety. There were no tour patches. There's always tour patches.
Rossi didn't even mention the new album, even though they've been plugging it on TV & radio. I get the impression that they've had zero input into its release and they just don't care, or are perhaps even embarrassed about having to promote yet another greatest hits.
They seem to be completely at a loss about what to do with the setlist. They tried putting in FF songs last year, and that went down like a lead balloon, so what have they done this year? Brought back in The Wanderer and Gerdundula. I'm guessing they moved Burning Bridges to replace Hold You Back, for the 'jumping' song.
The only thing I enjoyed about the gig was having Parfitt within arms length of me at the front of the stage, hammering out Bye Bye Johnny. He was so close that I could see the detail of the mother of pearl fret markers on his white tele. He was so close that I didn't even want to take a photo because I just wanted to drink in the power and the awe inspiring image of my rock hero doing what he does best right in front of me. I will never forget it and it was worth the ticket price just for that precious minute.
But I never really want to see Rhino looking bored out of his brains playing The Oriental again.
I'm going to Birmingham and Sheffield, but I daresay that's it for me now. If they announce a final tour I'll go to say goodbye, but, like I say, it was the beginning of the end for me.

I went to Manchester last night, and I've got a different take on it. I totally agree with the set list comments, but, I think I've now got past the point of caring about the set list, and I just go for the 'live' experience. I'm not sure about Panto Quo, I think they've turned into Disco Quo! We went to see State of Quo in the afternoon, which is fantastic. They play a Frantic Four type set, they even played Slow Train! So we'd been drinking since about 3.30pm, and by the time Quo came on I was ready for it. I just jumped and rocked and clapped for an hour and forty minutes, and a part from Gerdundula, the set didn't really bother me. It was the real thing, the real Quo, on fire and rocking to their own songs, albeit a very pop orientated set. And as good as some of the tribute acts are, there's nothing for me like watching the real thing, even if it is different than it was 10, 20, 30 or 40 years ago. They didn't look bored to me, they looked in great spirits, they played well, sang well, and the sound was awesome. This is what they've evolved into; this is where they're at. We've had the FF, we've had Aquostic, we've had Rossi solo, we've had the Quo of yesterday, and now we've got this, the Quo of 50 years on. I don't want to stop going this close to the end of their career, so I've accepted it for what it is, and I go along to rock out to whatever they play, whatever order it's in. I ignored the set list and enjoyed it for what it was and had a great night

That's fair enough mate, and I'm usually the same attitude as you. Especially if I've had a few beers and I'm with my mates who want to rock out. Like you say, it is enough just to be in the same room as them, listening to that fantastic sound they make, live and loud, regardless of what they play. But the FF did some real damage to my expectations of what I want. They even tried last year to please the hardcore by playing a few songs, but it didn't work, and they must have realised it was a waste of time so they've not even bothered this year. I'd have been happy just to hear Don't Waste My Time instead of Creepin Up on You. That small change would have prevented me from feeling like I do now. But like their song says: enough is enough.
